The Cosy Home Guide: Choosing the Right Throw for a New Zealand Winter

There is a particular magic to a New Zealand winter evening — rain on the window, the heat pump ticking away, and the irresistible pull of the couch. The humble throw is what turns that moment into a ritual. But with faux fur, fleece, flannel and wool blends all promising warmth, which one should you actually reach for? Here is our plain-English guide to choosing the right throw blanket in NZ.

First, how warm do you need it to be?

The quickest way to judge a blanket's warmth is its weight and pile — the heavier and denser, the warmer. If you genuinely feel the cold, or you are buying for a chilly Dunedin or Central Otago home, lean towards a thick, weighty layer like an artificial lamb cashmere blanket or a dense bubble fleece. If you want something to style and layer in a milder Auckland or Tauranga winter, a lighter throw will do the job without overheating you.

The materials, honestly

Every material has a job it does best. Here is how ours stack up:

  • Faux fur — the plush, indulgent one. Our faux rabbit fur throw is all about softness and that luxe, tactile feel. Brilliant draped over the end of a bed or a reading chair.
  • Fleece & sherpa — the everyday warm one. Soft, light, machine-washable and forgiving with kids and pets. Our bubble cloud fleece blanket is the cosy all-rounder.
  • Flannel — the quilted, weighty one. A flannel fleece comforter brings real heft for the coldest nights.
  • Wool blend — the classic, breathable one. Our double-sided wool throw is reversible and built for genuine winter warmth.
  • Velvet — the lightweight, decorative one. A velvet print throw adds pattern and a smooth finish for milder evenings.

Match the throw to the room

For the couch: you want something soft enough to wrap up in and good-looking enough to leave out. A mid-weight throw draped over one arm is the easy win — browse our sofa throws.

For the bed: a larger, heavier layer you can fold across the foot of the bed and pull up on cold nights. See our bedroom throws.

For genuine winter warmth: our Winter Warmers collection gathers the thickest, warmest options in one place.

Getting the size right

There are no strict standards for throws, but as a rough guide: a 100×150cm throw suits one person on the couch; 150×200cm covers a single or works as a generous couch layer; and 200×230cm will drape across a queen bed. When in doubt, size up — a throw that is a touch too big always looks and feels better than one that is too small.

Caring for your throw

Most of our fleece and polyester throws are happy with a gentle cold machine wash and a line dry — avoid high heat, which can flatten the pile. Faux fur prefers a gentle cold wash, drying flat, and a good shake to revive its loft. Wool blends are best on a wool cycle or dry-cleaned. Always check the care note on the product page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the warmest type of throw blanket?
For sheer warmth, a thick, dense option — heavyweight fleece, quilted flannel or a wool blend — will out-perform a light decorative throw. Weight and density matter more than the specific fibre.

What size throw blanket should I buy?
For draping over a couch, 130×150cm to 150×200cm is ideal. To cover a queen bed, look for around 200×230cm. Size up if you are unsure.

Are faux fur throws warm?
Yes — faux fur traps a surprising amount of heat thanks to its dense pile, and it feels wonderfully soft. It is also easier to care for than real fur.

How long does delivery take?
Our throws are made to order and arrive in around two to three weeks, with tracking. Free NZ delivery applies on orders over $200.
